ACTIVATING HIDDEN SPACES

blog • 5 min. reading time

We are experts in transformation projects. We love to design interventions that highlight the hidden qualities of places.

Every building and every place has a story that deserves a new chapter. Sometimes writing this new chapter means restoring historic qualities. Sometimes this means inserting a new component that converses with the existing structure. And sometimes this means creating a dramatic intervention that makes way for a new experience entirely. Buildings with unique qualities enable us to redefine their identity time and time again...

In this blog, we look back on some of our best transformation projects.

1 dramatic interventions

Some buildings are in need of a dramatic intervention to meet modern day needs. It’s a matter of finding a delicate balance between the historic elements and new interventions.

In the project ‘a bold intervention’ P·A made optimal use of the building’s lavish floor-to-ceiling heights to create additional stories, mezzanines and voids. The contrast between the street side and garden side of the redesigned residence calls attention to the relationship between the classic architecture of the 19th century and the contemporary style. It’s exemplary for our approach.

2 smart connections

An empty cellar, hidden heigh ceilings… most buildings have a lot of expert space that isn’t connected or used. In the project ‘three levels connected’, P·A opened up an inaccesible souterrain by introducing a new set of stairs between the old building and extension. Finding little unused space that can be perfectly used is something we have become know for by our clients; from little hidden shelves to big living stairs you can sit on.

3 careful restaurations for new functions

Most buildings are incredibly flexible if dealt with consciously. There is often no real need to ditch old elements for economic purposes. On the contrary, restoring carefully makes a building unique and highlights a quality that will last time and time again, a smart investment. It is a matter of finding a balance between what to restore and what to do to meet modern day standards.

In the project ‘pub down the street’ we carefully restored a former bank into three spacious apartments and a new pub. Rather than stripping everything to meet modern day standards, we decide to bring many elements back. We introduced a new floor with floor heating and insulated the building form the inside. But the original windows were kept and provided with double glass and classic elements like the ensuite separation restored. The result are apartments with a smart and efficient layout and a high level of finishing.
